The pleasant town of Goldsboro was founded along the banks of the Neuse River in 1847. Today the city is home to the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, home of the 4th Fighter Wing. A visit to Goldsboro should include a feast of the finest BBQ in North Carolina, a tour of the historic downtown area, and perhaps a festival or two if your timing is right. If you hear a loud roar in the sky, it's probably a F15 Strike Eagle jet from the near by air base.
If you are near Goldsboro and are interested in one of North Carolina's most influential governors, stop in at the Charles B Aycock Birthplace Historic Site. The site presents the life and times of this great man and features a turn of the century one-room schoolhouse, corn barn, stables, and a three-season kitchen. Stop in at the visitor's center first to view an interesting video and to check out the exhibits.
The Cliffs of the Neuse State Park was established in 1945 when a local landowner donated the property. Located near Goldsboro, the state park has most things an outdoor enthusiast would look forward to including boating, swimming, camping, fishing, hiking, picnicking and visiting an historical museum. Cliffs of the Neuse State Park also has an active event calendar throughout the summer, be sure to check and see what is going on.
