Fayetteville, NC Tourist Attractions

The city of Fayetteville makes an excellent base to strike out from and explore a fine selection of North Carolina's attractions. The city of 174,000 also has a historic downtown full of restored buildings, several museums, and three colleges and universities. Fayetteville is also an important center for the military as Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base are located nearby.

Airborne and Special Operations Museum

The Airborne and Special Operations Museum in Fayetteville is a must see for anyone interested in the intricacies of aerial and covert operations. The museum has five permanent exhibits; Early Airborne, World War II, Korea and Cold War, Vietnam, and Contingency Operations & Training. The museum is housed in an architecturally stunning building and there is a gift shop on the premises featuring unique take home mementos.

Cape Fear Botanical Garden

While in Fayetteville, why not take some time and smell the roses? The best spot to do that is at the Cape Fear Botanical Garden. Here visitors will find an amazing display of plants arranged in eye-catching arrangements. The Cape Fear Botanical Garden features a wooded area with walking trails, several ponds, and a gazebo. The gardens are spread out over 85 acres, so it is easy to find your own contemplative space.

Fayetteville Museum of Art (closed)

The Art Museum of Fayetteville is an interesting place to visit. Built specifically as an art museum, the facility features two galleries, studio space, an art reference & slide lending library, classrooms and a museum store. The grounds surrounding the museum are a pleasant place for a stroll and feature a variety of outdoor sculpture.

First United Presbyterian Church

The First United Presbyterian Church located in Fayetteville was built around the turn of the 20th Century. It is considered one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival churches in the city and marks an important part of African American religious history. The church has an active religious calendar and visitors are always welcome to stop in for a visit or for a service.

Fort Bragg

Fort Bragg is one of the most famous of the many US Military bases. It is the home of the Airborne, Special Operations Forces, US Army Parachute Team, and Special Operations Command. The general public can visit Fort Bragg, however, photo identification is required at the entry gate. Located near Fayetteville, Fort Bragg is one of the cities key employers.

82nd Airborne Division Museum

The 82nd Airborne Division Museum is located in Fayetteville, on the grounds of Fort Bragg. The museum profiles the development of the airborne forces from 1940 until present day. On display are artifacts from the airborne division along with factual descriptions. Of particular note is the multitude of military aircraft on display in the park-like grounds of the museum. Be sure to bring appropriate identification in order to be admitted to visit Fort Bragg.

John F Kennedy Special Warfare Museum

The John F Kennedy Special Warfare Museum in Fayetteville is a fascinating collection of items all specifically related to US Army Special Operations. The museum specializes in items from the 20th Century with a particular emphasis on items from Vietnam. Also on display are ethnographical items from the indigenous people of South East Asia.

Museum of the Cape Fear

The Museum of the Cape Fear is a great spot to visit if you are interested in the history of southern North Carolina, with displays from prehistoric days until now. The site consists of three buildings that contain the museum itself, the 1897 Poe House, and Arsenal Park. The Museum of the Cape Fear also conducts research into events of the past through archeological digs.

Fascinate-U Children's Museum

The Fascinate-U Children's Museum in Fayetteville makes for a great family outing. A wonderful variety of hands on and interactive exhibits will provide hours of fun and entertainment for children under 11 years old. A couple of the stand out exhibits are the giant teeth, the fire engine, and the tools/building area.
