The Heartland Region of North Carolina has a variety of interesting sights including the cities of Raleigh and Fayetteville.
Goldsboro, North Carolina
The pleasant town of Goldsboro was founded along the banks of the Neuse River in 1847. Today the city is home to the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, home of the 4th Fighter Wing. A visit to Goldsboro should include a feast of the finest BBQ in North Carolina, a tour of the historic downtown area, and perhaps a festival or two if your timing is right. If you hear a loud roar in the sky, it's probably a F15 Strike Eagle jet from the near by air base.
Charles B Aycock Birthplace Historic Site
If you are near Goldsboro and are interested in one of North Carolina's most influential governors, stop in at the Charles B Aycock Birthplace Historic Site. The site presents the life and times of this great man and features a turn of the century one-room schoolhouse, corn barn, stables, and a three-season kitchen. Stop in at the visitor's center first to view an interesting video and to check out the exhibits.
Cliffs of the Neuse State Park
The Cliffs of the Neuse State Park was established in 1945 when a local landowner donated the property. Located near Goldsboro, the state park has most things an outdoor enthusiast would look forward to including boating, swimming, camping, fishing, hiking, picnicking and visiting an historical museum. Cliffs of the Neuse State Park also has an active event calendar throughout the summer, be sure to check and see what is going on.
Tobacco Farm Life Museum, Kenly, North Carolina
The Tobacco Farm Life Museum, located in Kenly depicts the life and times of people working on a turn of the century farm. The attraction consists of a 6000 square foot museum, homestead, detached kitchen, smokehouse, log tobacco barn, and an outhouse. Displays include period pieces of furniture and hand operated appliances. The Tobacco Farm Life Museum also has a wonderful little gift shop selling unique items.
Pinehurst Resort, Pinehurst, North Carolina
Pinehurst Resort in the town of Pinehurst was built in 1895 by James W Tufts. It has always been a popular golf and health retreat, attracting golfers for over a century. In the 1980s Pinehurst was restored and returned to it's original grandeur. Today the resort promotes itself as a golf and spa destination, although it's main claim to fame has always been the golfing. Even if you are not staying at this historic inn, it is worth driving by to see the building and grounds.

Blount-Bridgers House, Tarboro, North Carolina
The Blount-Bridgers House located in Tarboro, is one of the town's most significant landmarks. This impressive building was constructed in 1808 and has been meticulously restored to its former glory. Inside visitors will find period pieces from the 19th Century along with a history of the life and times of Hobson Pittman. Many of Hobson Pittman's art pieces are also on display as are other local historical artists.
General William C Lee Airborne Museum, Dunn, North Carolina
The General William C. Lee Airborne Museum, located in Dunn, is dedicated to General William C. Lee and his tireless pursuit of the creation of a special airborne division. The museum showcases the life and times of this great man and provides insight into the rationale behind his dream. The museum is housed in his former mansion that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Historic Halifax State Historic Site, Halifax, North Carolina
Historic Halifax State Historic Site provides visitors with an opportunity to see a selection of 18th and 19th Century buildings from when the city was a bustling river port. The various buildings can be toured and are immaculately restored and furnished in the styles of the 18th & 19th Centuries. Some of the buildings include a jail, a tavern, and the home of a wealthy landowner.
Robeson County Showcase Museum, Lumberton, North Carolina
The Robeson County Showcase Museum, in the pleasant town of Lumberton, is a treasure trove of history on the Robeson County area from prehistoric days until present day. The museum is housed in the former Southern Express railroad building that has been extensively restored and renovated. The museum is easily located in downtown Lumberton.
Bentonville Battleground State Historic Site, Newton Grove, North Carolina
The Bentonville Battleground State Historic Site, located near Bentonville, marks one of North Carolina's most significant battles of the US Civil War. The battle at Bentonville was the largest ever fought in North Carolina and took place March 19-21, 1865. Facilities at the site include the restored 1855 Harper House, a visitor's center, picnic facilities, and a gift shop.
Southern Pines - Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve
Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve in Southern Pines serves to protect the environment and offer education on nature and mans interaction with nature. On site is an exhibit hall with information and interactive displays. The Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve also features hiking trails and opportunities for bird and wildlife viewing, making it a great place for a day outing.
Uwharrie National Forest, Troy, North Carolina
Uwharrie National Forest is named for the Uwharrie Mountains. The forest includes just over 50,000 acres of woods and streams. The area is a popular outdoor recreational area and includes a 33 km / 20 mi trail known as the Uwharrie National Recreation Trail.Located within Uwharrie National Forest is Badin Lake, a where visitors will find opportunities for camping, hiking, fishing, boating, and hunting.
