The city of Burlington is steeped in history and is a great place to base yourself as you tour the sights of Alamance County. Here you will find Civil War history, great golf courses, fine dining, friendly locals, and good shopping. For those who enjoy the outdoors, great hiking is nearby as is canoeing and fishing in the local rivers. The city of Burlington was founded in the mid 19th Century and currently has just over 45,000 full time residents.
Alamance Battleground State Historic Site
Near Burlington, a log cabin and a granite marker now mark the spot where the battle of Alamance took place in 1771, in what is now Alamance Battleground State Historic Site. Battling farmers called Regulators took on the government's militia and were crushed quite mercilessly. The visitor's center is a good place to start. Inside a DVD can be viewed that will explain the reasons behind the confrontation and what happened during and after the event. At certain times of the year various events celebrating the history of the region take place, be sure to check to see when they are happening and plan your visit to Alamance Battleground State Historic Site accordingly.
Alamance County Historical Museum
For those wishing to delve deeper into local history, the Alamance County Historical Museum is just the spot. The museum features permanent and rotating exhibits, some of which are Native American artifacts, local quilts, pottery, and vintage clothing. The museum is housed in a nicely restored 19th Century building and a tour includes the outbuildings such as a summer kitchen. If you are visiting in the summer, be sure to check out the wonderful rose gardens.
Snow Camp Outdoor Theatre
The Snow Camp Outdoor Theatre in Burlington features the historical dramas Sword of Peace, and Pathway to Freedom. The productions are a long running institution in the Burlington. The first portrays the struggles of the peaceful Quakers during the Revolutionary War and the second describes the role of North Carolina in the effort to free slaves and the Underground Railway.
