The small town of Beaufort is a great spot to spend some time when touring the Crystal Coast of North Carolina. Closely associated with Blackbeard, the town has a seafaring nature and it is nice to wander along the waterfront and reflect back on Beaufort's history that started in 1709. The town has comfortable accommodations and lots of great dining options, many of which feature locally caught seafood.
The town of Beaufort contains the Beaufort Historic Site. Here visitors will find a variety of immaculately restored homes that can be toured for a fee. Costumed interpreters provide insight and entertaining stories of life in Beaufort during the 18th and 19th Centuries. Also part of the Beaufort Historic Site is the Burying Ground, a cemetery listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort is designed to give visitors an appreciation for North Carolina's coastal cultural heritage while preserving the maritime history. Exhibits deal with both the natural history of the North Carolina coast as well as the maritime history.
