Nonthaburi - Prison

A unique place of interest is Nonthaburi Prison, which is still in use. Instruments of torture are displayed in a small museum belonging to the "Correctional Staff Division", affiliated to the prison, where prison officers are trained. During the Ayutthaya period these instruments were used by royal officials to extract confessions. Also of interest are a number of instruments employed in the execution of prisoners condemned to death.

Of particular note is a rattan ball, with nails lining its interior. Criminals under sentence of death were put inside such a ball, after which elephants were allowed to play with their "football". With luck, visitors will encounter an English speaking official able to explain the exhibits.
