Abbey Ruins Description
About 17km/10.5mi east of Nivelles lies Villers-la-Ville where the most impressive of the ruins of the Cistercian abbey, the largest monastic ruins in Belgium, can be visited. The complex, founded in 1146 by Bernhard von Clairvaux after the model of the mother house in Citeaux, arose principally in the 12th and 13th C. and during its history was laid waste on several occasions, but until the 18th C. was again and again restored. Finally the French revolutionary troops destroyed the building which was then used as a quarry and was even further plundered. In the middle of the 19th C. a railroad viaduct crossed the area.
