Nîmes - Notre-Dame et St Castor
Nīmes Hotels
The Cathedral of Notre-Dame et St-Castor stands on the Place aux Herbes in the center of the Old Town, almost due east of the Maison Carrée and reached from the latter along the Rue de l'Horloge with its 14th C. clock tower. Originally built towards the end of the 11th C. and consecrated in 1096 by Pope Urban II, the cathedral has been renewed several times, in particular during the 19th C. in the Romanesque-Byzantine style. On the gable of the west front is an interesting Romanesque relief frieze, with scenes illustrating the story of the Creation, which is stylistically related to St Gilles and may date from the second half of the 12th C.
