Archaeological Site Description
Coming from Árta to Nikopolis, we first see, on the right of the road, the massive Roman theater and, some distance farther on, the Stadion, overgrown by scrub. We then cross the (barely visible) line of the Augustan town walls and see on the right, running parallel with the road, the inner side of Justinian's walls, which are reminiscent of the land walls of Constantinople with their towers and gates and their alternation of stone and brick in the masonry. Then come, immediately to the left of the road, the considerable remains of the Basilica of Alkyson, named after Bishop Alkyson (d. 516).
