Obby Oss Festival Description
The Obby Oss Festival is an annual May Day event and one of the oldest dance festivals in Europ. It can be traced as far back as pre-Christian times. The Oss is a black, canvas-skirted, six-foot wide monster wearing a witch-doctor's mask. The monster appears at 10:30am on May 1. After that, colorfully dressed followers parade around the Oss, singing and banging the drums. The festivities continue until 9:30pm when the Oss is supposed to die.
