Waiouru Attractions
A few kilometers south of Tongariro National Park, on Highway 1, is Waiouru (pop. 3000). In these inhospitable uplands (alt. c 800m) covered with tussock grass is the largest military camp in New Zealand, with an extensive training area. The little town has the highest railroad station on the North Island. In good weather there is a fine view of the volcanic mountains in the Tongariro area.

Rangipo Desert
To the north of Waiouru is the Rangipo Desert - not a real desert, but a barren region of poor soil and dry winds.
