At Te Araroa is one of the tallest and oldest pohutukawa trees in New Zealand. In 1820 there were savage raids in this area by Ngapuhi tribesmen from Northland armed with guns, in the course of which several thousand members of the Ngati Porou tribe are said to have been killed or enslaved.
