Rome Attractions

Initially Rome was called "De-O-Wain-Sta", which means "the carrying place". The Tomb of the Unkown Soldiers of the American Revolution is next to city hall. North of Rome is well-known for skiing, snowmobiling, hunting and fishing.
Fort Rickey Children's Discovery Zoo
Fort Rickey Discovery Zoo is geared to children. They can use all their senses to explore, manipulate and discover. The petting areas and hands-on presentations allow children to interact with the animals. Pony rides, pedal boats, a playground and wet play fountain.

Fort Stanwix National Monument
Fort Stanwix was built in 1758 to guard Oneida Carrying Place. Several treaties were signed at this fort which helped with future Indian relations. Visitors will catch a glimpse of life in Oneida Carrying Place including how people endured harsh conditions.

Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site
Oriskany Battlefield was considered to be a significant turning point in the War of Independence. The battle took place on August 6, 1777. This granite structure has been designated as a National Historic Landmark.

The Rome Sports Hall of Fame presents sports heritage through videotapes, photos, scrapbooks and memorabilia as well as paying tribute to local scholastic, amateur and professional athletes.
Rome-Boonville Gorge
The narrow valley runs from Rome to North Western and the gorge runs from North Western to Boonville. Portions of the Black River Canal can also be seen.
