Settled in 1803, within five years it had a population of 900. The Clarkson family ran a farm and other businesses, built Trinity Church and founded Thomas Clarkson Memorial College of Technology - now known as Clarkson University.
Gibson Gallery is located in Brainerd Hall at the State of University of New York. Exhibits change on a regular basis featuring student as well as regional, national and international artists. Collections consists of significant American, European and Japanese works of art including painting, sculpture, works on paper, prints, ceramics, and photographs.

Permanent exhibits at the Potsdam Public Museum includes the Burnap Collection of English pottery that dates from 1700-1870 as well as Delft chargers, Wedgewood, lusterware, and relief wares. Other displays include the history of Potsdam and the Knowles family.
