Mormonism and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began in Palmyra, it was also the home of Joseph Smith. The church was organized and the Book of Mormon published nearby in 1830.
The Alling Coverlet Museum houses the largest collection of coverlets in the US. The coverlets date from the 1830s to the 1880s. The second floor of the museum is also home to changing quilt displays.

The Book of Mormon Historic Publication Site in Palmyra allows visitors to view the printing and binding processes of the 1820s. This is the location where Joseph Smith met with E B Grandin to discuss printing the first 5,000 copies of the Book of Mormon. The book was translated from gold plates.

In A.D. 421, Moroni buried a set of gold plates on which he recorded the history of his people. In 1827, Moroni returned as an angel and delivered the plates to Joseph Smith, who translated them and published them as the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ. Paintings, exhibits, and video presentations, explain the significance of the hill in the visitors' center.

The site includes the Smith frame home, the reconstructed log home and the Sacred Grove. The Grove is where Joseph Smith received his message from God.
Palmyra Historic Museum, once a hotel, now houses 23 rooms of history. The rooms are filled with period furnishings, dolls, toys, school items, military memorabilia, photographs, and paintings. A collection of canal items and information is also featured.
