Located on the western edge of the Catskills, Oneonta is the Oneida Indian word for "cliffs abound". In 1863, it was the site of a major railroad car building shop. The Delaware and Hudson roundhouse was the largest turntable in the world when first built.
The National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta features interactive exhibits, artifacts, historic footage and a video wall. The Kicks Zone lets players test their skills and their strategy with speed dribbles, a header cage, animated "Kick It" games, power shots, The Wall, and three-on-three challenges.
Visitors to the Science Discovery Center on the campus of the State University College can experience science through hands-on exhibits and educational displays. Exhibits include matter, force, fluids, sounds, electricity and optics.
