Founded in 1848 by John Noyes, the Oneida community was a religious and social commune who called themselves the Perfectionists. That way of life ceased in 1881. Oneida Ltd, silverware manufacturer, has factories and home offices in the area and continues some of the cooperative features from the corporation formed many years ago.
Housed in "Cottage Lawn", a Gothic Revival mansion, the society offers exhibits on local history, a genealogical library and seven period rooms. An agricultural museum that has displays regarding hops can be found in the carriage barn.
