the river that bears his name as far as the site of present-day Albany. In 1623 the Dutch colony of Nieuw Holland was founded here, and settlers were brought in from the Netherlands. In 1664 the colony was ceded to Britain and in 1665 became a Crown Colony. The town of New York was occupied by British forces during the whole of the War of Independence. On July 26th 1788 New York became the eleventh of the founding states to adopt the Constitution.

Economy The produce of the state's highly specialized agriculture (poultry rearing, dairy farming; fruit and vegetables, including potatoes) is mainly devoted to supplying the great city conurbations. It also has the highest industrial output in the United States after the state of California, with roughly half of its total industrial production coming from New York City. The main tourist areas in the state are the Adirondacks and the Great Lakes, with Niagara Falls and New York City as the principal highlights.
