Horseheads gained its name from the horses that were destroyed, upon collapsing on the return journey to Pennsylvania, after the battle with the Six Nations of the Iroquois. The over 300 sun-bleached skulls were all that greeted the European settlers that arrived in 1789. The Historical Society Museum houses local artifacts and work by 20th century political cartoonist Eugene "Zim" Zimmerman.
