Herkimer Attractions

Herkimer was settled in 1725 by German Palatines. It was the center of state politics and conventions during the early 1800s. Digging in recent years has found the "Herkimer Diamonds" which are rare, clear quartz crystals.
Erie Canal Cruises
Erie Canal Cruises offer 1.5 hr cruises on the Erie Canal complete with a full historical narration of the 3 Erie Canals and they're importance to the growth of the United States. The cruises include travel thru a historic lock where the vessel and passengers are raised and lowered 20 feet into the Mohawk River.

Herkimer County Historical Society Museum
The Herkimer County Historical Society is housed in the 1884 Suiter Building, the Queen Anne home of Dr. A. Walter Suiter, a prominent citizen and physician. Details of agriculture, industry and domestic life in Herkimer County from the 1700s to 1990s are highlighted. The old county jail and a doll house collection can also be toured.
