Elmira Attractions

The first settlers arrived in 1779 on the site that is now Elmira. The name of the city was decided in 1808, apparently based on the name of a child who wandered into a town meeting while they were trying to decide on a name.

Woodlawn National Cemetery is the grave site of over 3,000 Confederate soldiers, who died in the local prisoner of war camp.
