The first settlers arrived in 1779 on the site that is now Elmira. The name of the city was decided in 1808, apparently based on the name of a child who wandered into a town meeting while they were trying to decide on a name.
Woodlawn National Cemetery is the grave site of over 3,000 Confederate soldiers, who died in the local prisoner of war camp.
The Arnot Art Museum is housed in an 1833 Greek Revival mansion. The permanent collections on display include 17th, 18th and 19th century Dutch, Flemish, French and German paintings. Asian, Egyptian, Pre-Columbian, and Native American collections are also part of the museum collection. Other changing exhibits at the Arnot Art Museum include American art and bronze sculptures.

Chemung Valley History Museum in Elmira houses local and state historical artifacts as well as items that belonged to Mark Twain. Three of the galleries offer temporary exhibitions.
A 12 foot high monument marks the grave of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). Grave markers for many of his family members bear quotes from the author's work.
Susan and Theodore Crane presented the study to Samuel L. Clemens in 1874. It overlooked the Chemung River Valley. In 1952 the Mark Twain Study was moved from Quarry Farm to the Elmira College campus.
In 1983, the Center for Mark Twain Studies began offering a graduate certificate.

The National Soaring Museum presents the history of motorless flight. Historic gliders, films, and interactive computer programs are available including a cockpit simulator. The collection of sailplanes date from the late 1890s to the late 20th century.

Sent by General Washington, John Sullivan and his men successfully routed the Iroquois from the Chemung River Valley, thus opening the territory to settlers. The site is marked with an obelisk. This 330 acre park offers camping, hiking and picnicking.
