Dunkirk was previously known as Chadwick's Bay, founded 1805, but was renamed in 1817 because its harbor resembled Dunkerque, France. The harbor offers many recreational opportunities such as fishing, boating, swimming and water skiing.
The Dunkirk Historical Lighthouse site features a working lighthouse, built in 1875, and three buildings filled with military and maritime artifacts. The Keeper's House is a brick Victorian residence that houses many of the museum exhibits, on the main floor, highlighting the life of a Keeper from 1875-1960. Second floor is set up as a military museum with artifacts from four branches of the armed forces for all wars.
The tower is 60 feet tall with an observation deck (55 steps to the deck).
