The village of Canastota was first settled in 1810 by Reuben Perkins, who purchased 329 and 1/2 acres of former Indian territory from New York State. The village was incorporated in 1835, when it was a booming Erie Canal town.
Canastota offers many leisure and recreational activities such as fishing, camping, hunting, boating, golf, skiing, and trail riding.
The Canastota Canal Town Museum is located in an 1874 house, one of the oldest structures in the village. Exhibits of artifacts and authentic canal memorabilia are featured in the museum's collection. These include pictures, slides, books, cemetery files, news clippings, and local genealogy information.
