Amsterdam was settled in 1783 and became an important industrial center due to the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825.
The Noteworthy Indian Museum features over 60,000 artifacts including clay pots, stone tools, beadwork and baskets that tell the story of the Mohawk. A cultural timeline traces Native American life in the Mohawk Valley from 12,000 years ago to the present.
The Museum has a collection of over 15,000 items pertaining to science, nature and history. Some of the permanent displays include a blacksmith shop, Victorian furnishings, Eskimo exhibits, and a nature room.
