New York - Washington Square
Washington Square is the gateway to the Village. It began as a cemetery, then a dueling ground an until 1819, a site for public hangings. Today, it is a public gathering place. The marble arch was designed by renowned architect, Stanford White, to mark the centenary of George Washington's inauguration.
