Socorro is the seat of Socorro County in southwest New Mexico. It is one of the oldest settlements in the Southwest, and was the state's largest town during its mining heyday in 1886.
Mineral Museum
The Mineral Museum in Socorro has mineral and mining specimens from around the world. Established in 1889, the museum has been used to educate engineers and geologists.

New Mexico Institute Of Mining And Technology
The New Mexico Institute Of Mining And Technology in Socorro was established in 1889. The university specializes in science and engineering education, and research.
San Miguel Mission
The San Miguel Mission in Socorro was built around 1820 on the ruins of an earlier mission. It underwent extensive renovations in 1973.

Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge
The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge in Socorro has 229,700 acres, 65 species of mammals and 217 species of birds. It is closed to general public use for recreational purposes, but special tours can be arranged. Sevilleta is primarily as a research area, with limited waterfowl and dove hunting available, and special tours including environmental education programs.
