The Apache Kid Wilderness area includes the higher peaks of the southern San Mateo Mountains, part of the Cibola National Forest. The 44,650-acre wilderness is named after the Indian outlaw who raided local ranches.

Withington Wilderness
Withington Wilderness occupies 18,869 acres on the eastern slopes of the northern San Mateo Mountains in the Cibola National Forest. The rugged land ranges from 6,800 to 10,100 feet in elevation, with three trails and limited camping.
