Raton is located in Colfax County near the Colorado border. Five blocks of the downtown area have been designated as a Downtown Historic District, with dozens of locally significant buildings.
The National Rifle Association Whittington Center in Raton was established in 1973. Today the facility offers a large outdoor shooting and hunting center. There are a variety of shooting ranges including high power rifle, skeet, sporting clays, long range pistol silhouette, benchrest, and practical pistol.

The Raton Museum has exhibits on the mining, railroad and ranching history of the town, as well as local Indian cultures. The museum is on First Street in the Coors Building, which dates from 1906.

Sugarite Canyon State Park is located on the Colorado border, ten miles east of Raton. The 3,600 acres of mountain forests and lakes are popular for cross-country skiing and ice fishing.

At the ruins of Sugarite Coal Camp there is a visitor center with historical exhibits and an interpretive trail.
