The town of Lovington is located in southeast New Mexico, 18 miles west of the Texas border and 22 miles northwest of Hobbs. Founded early in the 20th century as a ranching and farming center, the town became the seat of Lea County when it was formed in 1917. The discovery of oil at nearby Denton Pool gave a significant boost to the economy from the 1950s onward.
Chapparal Park in Lovington has a 20-acre fishing lake, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts. Every July 4th at 3 p.m. the park is the location for "The World's Greatest Lizard Race", where lizards of all sizes compete for trophies.
