The Billy The Kid Museum in Fort Sumner depicts life during the time period in which he lived. Displays include items which belonged to the Kid himself as well as more than 150 firearms and antique automobiles.

Fort Sumner State Monument focuses on the history of Old Fort Sumner, but also includes information on Billy The Kid, who was shot and killed in nearby Maxwell House by Sheriff Pat Garrett in 1881. Maxwell House was destroyed by floods.

The Old Fort Sumner Museum is located just up the road from Fort Sumner State Monument. Most of the exhibits are related to Billy The Kid, who is buried in a grave behind the museum.
Sumner Lake State Park has a 4,500-acre lake that is stocked with bass and catfish. Camping, hiking, swimming, and wildlife viewing are other popular activities.
