Freehold was the site of the Battle of Monmouth when Gen. George Washington overtook Sir Henry Clinton's army. Outdoor recreation is available at nearby Turkey Swamp County Park.
Monmouth Battlefield State Park was the site of one of the largest battles of the American Revolution. The historic site has hilly farmland and hedgerows, noted for its rural 18th-century landscape, that offer hiking and horseback riding trails. The Craig farmhouse, home to a family of five during the battle, has been restored. There are picnic areas and a visitor's center.
The Monmouth Museum has several historic homes filled with collections of furniture, paintings and decorative arts including English and Chinese ceramics, folk art and toys. The Library and Archives houses over 200,000 documents such as local newspapers, reference books and photographs.
