The Black River & Western Railroad began with William Whitehead in Oldwick, NJ in the late 1950s as a portion of the defunct Rockaway Valley line went through his backyard. He and his sons began laying track but were halted when Route 78 was expanded so they moved elsewhere to begin a tourist railroad. The first official passenger service began in April, 1965.
