The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1960. Swamp woodland, hardwood ridges, cattail marsh, and grassland are found throughout the 7,768 acres of the refuge. Over 244 species of birds can be found according to their seasonal particulars. Mammals found on the refuge include fox, deer, muskrat, turtles, fish, frogs and a wide variety of wildflowers and plants also call the refuge "home".

Tips: The Refuge Headquarters is open Mon-Fri, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and is closed on federal holidays. The Helen C. Fenske Visitor Center is open Thursdays and Fridays, 12 p.m.-4 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and is closed on federal holidays.
