New Hampshire (named after the English county) lies in the north-eastern United States between Maine and Vermont. The northern part of the state is dominated by the granite massif of the White Mountains, part of the Appalachian range, with Mount Washington (6,288 ft), the highest peak in the New England states. To the south of the hills is a wooded upland region with innumerable lakes formed during the Ice Age; the largest of them is Lake Winnipesaukee.
