deciduous and coniferous forests, in the latter of which Weymouth pines predominate. Lying as it does between high ranges of hills and the coast, there are considerable differences in climate in different parts of the state.

History After exploratory voyages in the early 16th c. the first Puritan settlers from England landed on the coast in 1623. In 1775 New Hampshire deposed its British Governor and thus became the first colony to break away from the mother country. On June 21st 1788 it became the ninth of the founding states to adopt the United States Constitution.

Economy New Hampshire's agriculture, now declining, specialises mainly in milk production and poultry rearing. In the south-east of the state is a dense industrial zone in which the most important branches of industry are electrical and mechanical engineering, papermaking and textiles. Tourism is of great economic importance; the hills in the north in particular offer ideal conditions for nature and sporting holidays (excellent skiing).
