The small town of Cornish (pop. 1,700) became known as an arts center in the 1900's with artists such as Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Maxfield Parrish taking up residence in the town.

Of note in the vicinity are Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site and a covered bridge built in 1866.
