Neustrelitz - Lake District

The Neustrelitz lake district lies between Lake Müritz in the northwest and the Lychen-Templin lakes in the southeast, extending south as far as Mirow and Rheinsberg. The area is drained by the Rhine and the upper Havel.

Most of the Neustrelitz lake district is rolling wooded country, ranging in height between 80m/260ft and 120m/390ft, with various valleys containing small lakes.

Expanses of heathland and tracts of sandy soil with dunes and plantations of pines alternate with terminal moraines covered with deciduous woodland which bound the lake district on north and south. There are only small patches of agricultural land.

In many of the valleys there are strings of lakes separated by dry areas or damp water meadows. The Havel itself, which rises in the Neustrelitz lake district, is now a river and a lake.

The Müritz-Havel Canal links the Neustrelitz lakes with the Mecklenburg lake district (Lake Müritz, Kölpinsee, Fleesensee and Plauer See).
