In the old port of Oudeschild on the southeast coast - now a fishing village - ships used to lie at anchor in the 17th and 18th centuries before setting out on the voyage to the Dutch overseas colonies. Near the harbor is a museum displaying large numbers of objects which have been washed up on the shores of the island.
