The town of Hoensbroek lies northeast of Maastricht, close to the German frontier.

Kasteel Hoensbroek was built around 1360, but of the original castle, which was destroyed by fire, there remains only a single round tower. The castle was reconstructed in its present form in 1643. It is built on three islands which are surrounded by canals and linked with one another by bridges.
