Broek op Langendijk Attractions

A road runs north from Alkmaar to Broek op Langendijk through a vegetable-growing area traversed by numerous canals. From 1903 until quite recent times the vegetables (mainly cabbages) were shipped in flat-bottomed boats to the auction hall in Broek; but as a result of the redistribution of agricultural land in the area the transport of vegetables by boat became increasingly difficult, and finally the auction hall was closed. Now, after renovation, it houses a museum devoted to the landscape of the region and the life and work of the inhabitants. There are still, however, daily auctions at which visitors can buy vegetables, fruit and flowers.
