From Alkmaar an excellent road runs northwest through flat pasture to Bergen, also called Bergen-Binnen or Bergen in het Bosch. This popular summer resort, much favored by artists, has numbers of holiday houses charmingly situated in wooded country and numerous hotels and attractive restaurants.
Bergen was named one of the European Cities of Culture in 2000.
5km/3mi from Bergen is Bergen aan Zee, a quiet seaside resort with a beautiful broad beach. There is an aquarium with 50 tanks containing marine animals of all kinds, and also a seal pool.
Hours:
April 1 to October 31: 10am-6pm
November 1 to March 31: 11am-5pm; Closed: Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri
The coast road runs north from Bergen-Binnen, passing through stretches of wooded dunes and skirting the Boswachterij Schoorl, a tract of land 5km/3mi wide which is now a nature reserve. This is one of the broadest swathes of dunes in the Netherlands.
5km/3mi northwest of Schoorl, between Camperduin and Petten (Nuclear Research Center and European School), are the great dikes of the Hondsbosse Zeewering (sea-wall).
