The town of Apeldoorn, which first appears in the records in 793, lies on the eastern edge of the Veluwe, an expanse of sandy woodland and heath rising to a height of 110m/360ft between the Rhine, the IJssel and the Eem. Apeldoorn is now a select residential town with beautiful parks. It has a theological college, a Roman
Catholic seminary and colleges of engineering and automobile technology. It is also the commercial center of the surrounding area, with a varied range of industry (metallurgy, paper-making, textiles, chemicals; manufacture of fishing nets and computers).
