To the east of Rhenen is the Grebbeberg, which was a defensive position of the Dutch army in May 1940. Those who fell in the Second World War are commemorated by a monument and a military cemetery. On the hill is a zoo, the Ouwehands Dierenpark.
From Amerongen a road runs up the Lower Rhine valley to Rhenen, a little town dominated by the Cuneratoren (1492-1531), one of the finest Late Gothic towers in the country, reminiscent of the tower of Utrecht Cathedral. Pilgrims used to come here to revere the relics of St Cunera, which are still preserved in the St Cunerakerk.
