Nerja - Caves Cuevas de Nerja
A few kilometers northeast of Nerja are the Cuevas de Nerja, a cave system discovered in 1959, with four chambers containing bizarrely shaped stalactites and stalagmites and prehistoric rock paintings.
The lower gallery, well arranged for visitors, is about 800m/880yd long; upper gallery about 2,000m/2,200yd long. Many sinter formations, some very large (one pillar 60m/200ft high, 18m/60ft in diameter). Paleolithic wall paintings (stags, horses, goats, dolphins), particularly in upper gallery.
