Seven mi /11.2k of white sand beach hugs the Caribbean at Negril, a laid-back town on Jamaica's western edge. 52 mi/84km west of Montego Bay, Negril maintains the sleepy tropical charm that first attracted travelers in the 1960's. Clothing-optional sunbathing is part of the relaxed attitude.
Negril, population 4,200, offers craft markets and
duty-free shopping. Golf, tennis and horseback riding are available. Boats sail to Booby Cay, where the rare, blue-footed booby breeds and occasional canoe trips venture into the Great Morass swampland, a protected natural area where royal palms, exotic birds and crocodiles thrive. Several local companies offer numerous water-sports. With its remarkable coral reefs and calm, clear waters, Negril is a diver's favorite.
Negril's hotels are no taller than an average palm tree, due to efforts to limit development and protect natural resources, including the area's offshore reefs.
