Royal Attractions
Royal (pop. 75) is a small town within the Lewis and Clark Region. It is home to Ashfall Fossil Beds and Northeast Nebraska Zoo.
The Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park near Royal is the site of hundreds of skeletons of prehistoric animals found in a volcanic ash bed buried beneath the rolling farmlands. Preserved fossil rhinos, horses, camels, and birds are being dug out. There are nature trails.

The woods and grassland setting at the Northeast Nebraska Zoo near Royal features mountain lions, bobcats, bald eagles, hawks, owls and kestrels. The zoo is also home to Rueben, a chimpanzee who knows sign language as well as Przewalski horses, an ancestor of modern horses.
