Hastings (pop. 25,000) was founded in 1872 when the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad arrived. Hastings College opened in 1882. The Oregon Trail passes south of Hastings.
The Children's Museum of Central Nebraska in Hastings provides interactive educational exhibits designed for children such as period rooms of daily life, a general store, military artifacts, railroad and restored automobiles.
The Hastings Museum features natural habitat dioramas of wildlife such as hummingbirds and polar bears. Children can explore in the Discovery Center. The Lied IMAX Theatre features nature, science, history and space.
