Crawford - Fort Robinson State Park Attractions

Further to the north, in the extreme northwest of Nebraska, Fort Robinson was built in 1874. With its palisades and watchtowers it gives an excellent impression of conditions in the time of the Indian wars. Here in 1877 the Indian chief Crazy Horse, who had come to the fort for peace negotiations, was murdered.

Fort Robinson was an active military post from when it was built until 1948. Some of the people who had major roles in the history of the fort include Crazy Horse, Walter Reed, Red Cloud, Arthur MacArthur, Dull Knife, General Crook and Doc Middleton. Many of the original buildings have been restored including the stables, blacksmith shop, barracks and officers' quarters.

Today visitors can participate in horseback rides, jeep tours, hayrack breakfast, and steak or buffalo stew cookouts. Fort Robinson State Park encompasses 22,000 acres in the Pine Ridge Area.
