Alliance is the county seat of Box Butte County, originally named Grand Lake. The name was changed in 1888 by the the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad superintendent.
A notable attraction near the town is Carhenge, a replica of Stonehenge built of automobiles.
Carhenge, near Alliance, is a replica of Stonehenge that was created by using old cars. Six families gathering for a family reunion in 1987 came up with the idea! Other sculptures created with old cars and/or car parts are on the grounds.
Tips: Visiting hours are preferred during daylight hours although Carhenge is open 24/7.

Dobby's Frontier Town is a turn-of-the-century town with an authentic general store, post office, original bootlegger's cabin with lookout, Chinese laundry, Wells Fargo Bank and jail.
The Knight Museum of High Plains Heritage in Alliance features railroad, agricultural and American Indian exhibits that show the history of western Nebraska.
