Riverside Park and Zoo, Scottsbluff, Nebraska

The 23 acre Riverside Park and Zoo in Scottsbluff features both native and exotic wildlife exhibits with more than 200 animals.

Scotts Bluff National Monument

Within easy reach of Scottsbluff, in the far west of the state, are several places of interest. Scotts Bluff, just south of the town was an important landmark for settlers and Pony Express riders on their journey to the west. A circular road takes visitors round the most notable features (including the tracks of wagon wheels) and to the interesting Oregon Trail Museum.
The monument museum features exhibits on the human and natural history of the area and has a collection of paintings by the photographer and artist, William Henry Jackson.

North Platte, Nebraska

North Platte (pop. 24,000) is a railroad town that was the home of "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Fort McPherson Cemetery was once occupied by Fort McPherson, a military post along the Oregon Trail. The cemetery has many Buffalo soldiers and Medal of Honor figures buried there.

Buffalo Bill State Historical Park

The Buffalo Bill State Historical Park is home to Buffalo Bill's Ranch "Scout's Rest" with a restored house and barn. Mementos depict Cody's personal life and his Wild West show.

Cody Park

Cody Park in North Platte is the home of the Cody Park Railroad Museum, the Wild West Memorial and a life-size bronze statue of Buffalo Bill. There are carnival rides, swimming facilities and a petting zoo.

Lincoln County Historical Museum and Village

The Lincoln County Historical Museum is the home of the North Platte Canteen which contains memorabilia and artifacts from the Second World War.

Norfolk, Nebraska

Norfolk (pop. 24,000) was established in 1868 along the Elkhorn River. The town is home to a steel mill and a world-renowned livestock auction market.

Elkhorn Valley Museum and Research Center

The Elkhorn Valley Museum in Norfolk features photographs, books, and maps that show the history of the area. Exhibits include toys, a horse-drawn buggy and a tractor from 1918.

Norfolk Arts Center

The Norfolk Arts Center features a main gallery with historic to contemporary works, an outdoor sculpture garden, a fountain and brick walkway as well as theater and arts programs.

Nebraska City, Nebraska

Mayhew Cabin with John Brown's Cave

The Mayhew Cabin is a log home built by Allen and Barbara Mayhew in 1855. Barbara's younger brother, John Kagi, became associated with the famous abolitionist John Brown. The cabin was then used as a stopping point on the Underground Railroad. The site consists of a museum, the original Mayhew Cabin, a cave replica, an A.M.E. Church, a Missouri-Pacific Train Depot, and old log schoolhouse replica.

Arbor Lodge State Historical Park

Arbor Lodge was the home and estate of J. Sterling Morton, who originated the Arbor Day idea more than a century ago. This mansion began as a simple frontier home that was added to over the years. A tour of the Mansion and Carriage House, formal gardens and an arboretum featuring hundreds of trees is available.

Arbor Day Farm

Arbor Day Farm was the estate of the founder of Arbor Day J Sterling Morton. The site still contains some of the original buildings and orchards. The farm has trails, a working apple plant and the Lied Conference Center.

Wildwood Historic Home and Old Art Gallery

The Wildwood Historic Home was built in 1869 by Jasper Ware, an early Nebraska City banker. The restored 10-room house is decorated in Victorian style. The historic barns have been converted into an art gallery featuring regional artists.

Minden, Nebraska

Minden (pop. 3,000) is named for a German city that was the hometown for the founder, Frederick Bredemeier. The town is located in Kearney County in southern Nebraska.

Harold Warp Pioneer Village

The Pioneer Village complex in Minden features 28 buildings with more than 50,000 historical items. The site has a Frontier Fort. The art collection includes Currier and Ives prints. More than 350 antique automobiles are featured including trucks, motorcycles, snowmobiles and tractors.

Minden Opera House

The Minden Opera House was built in 1891. It is a theater and art gallery featuring an illuminated mural ceiling.

McCook, Nebraska

McCook (pop. 8,000) is located in southern Nebraska. It started as a frontier outpost. The town was named after Gen. Alexander McCook and developed along with the Burlington Railroad line. The discovery of oil nearby in the 1950s diversified the economy.

High Plains Museum

The High Plains Museum in McCook features exhibits and displays of late 19th and early 20th C living. Highlights include a fossil collection, wall paintings from a POW camp, and railroad artifacts.

Senator George Norris State Historic Site

The George Norris State Historic Site in McCook is the restored home of Senator George Norris who was the founder of the Tennessee Valley Authority. Furniture and mementos from Norris' lifetime are displayed.

Valentine, Nebraska

Valentine (pop. 2,800) began as a town on the Sioux City and Pacific railroad line in 1883. The town is named for E K Valentine, who was a Nebraska Congressman.

Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge

The Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge features skeletons and bone fragments that were dug from fossil beds on the refuge. These include the long-jawed mastodon and three-toed horse. They were in the area from 13 million years ago to the last ice age, about 12,000 years ago.
Herds of bison also roam the grasslands along with elk. Fort Niobrara was built in 1879 to keep the peace between the settlers and the Sioux Indians.

Niobrara National Scenic River

The Niobrara Valley offers a landscape of resources with ranches and farms. The western portion of the river has over ninety waterfalls and the upper section is an excellent area for canoeing.

Cherry County Historical Society Museum

The Cherry County Historical Society Museum in Valentine features historic artifacts and photos. A log cabin owned by the first postmaster has period furnishings.

Red Cloud, Nebraska

Red Cloud (pop. 1,100) was once part of the Omaha, Pawnee and Oto Indians hunting grounds and is now the county seat of Webster County, Nebraska. The town was founded in 1871 and named for an Oglala Sioux chief. The land attracted settlers and it still remains a farming and ranching area.

Willa Cather State Historic Site

Willa Cather who was a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, spent six years in Red Cloud. Many of the scenes and characters in her writings are based on the town.
Six structures include her childhood home, the Catholic and Episcopal churches, the Garber Bank, the Burlington Depot, and the Pavelka Farmstead.

Webster County Museum

The Webster County Museum showcases the history of Webster County since 1870 in a 1909 Revival-style mansion. Exhibits include furniture, toys, household items, photographs, and military memorabilia.

Royal, Nebraska

Royal (pop. 75) is a small town within the Lewis and Clark Region. It is home to Ashfall Fossil Beds and Northeast Nebraska Zoo.

Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park

The Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park near Royal is the site of hundreds of skeletons of prehistoric animals found in a volcanic ash bed buried beneath the rolling farmlands. Preserved fossil rhinos, horses, camels, and birds are being dug out. There are nature trails.

Northeast Nebraska Zoo (closed)

The woods and grassland setting at the Northeast Nebraska Zoo near Royal features mountain lions, bobcats, bald eagles, hawks, owls and kestrels. The zoo is also home to Rueben, a chimpanzee who knows sign language as well as Przewalski horses, an ancestor of modern horses.

Ogallala, Nebraska

Ogallala, in south-western Nebraska, takes visitors back to the days of cattle droving, with its saloon, general store, Cowboy Museum (Front St.) and Boot Hill Cemetery.
Ogallala (pop. 4,900) was a Pony Express and transcontinental railroad stop.

Mansion on the Hill

Completed in 1887, the Mansion on the Hill in Ogallala was contracted by L. A. Brandhoefer to be built with bricks from a local factory. The house includes period furnishings.

Lake McConaughy

To the north of Ogallala, the white sandy beaches of Lake McConaughy are ideal for relaxing, bathing, camping and fishing.

Petrified Wood Gallery

The Petrified Wood Gallery in Ogallala specializes in ancient woods and fossils. Other items on display include American Indian artifacts and gemstones.

Lexington, Nebraska

Originally called Plum Creek by the early settlers, Lexington (pop. 10,000) began as an early frontier trading post in 1860 in southern Nebraska, on the Platte River.
In 1889, the town's name was changed to Lexington in commemoration of the Battle of Lexington during the Revolutionary War. Recreational opportunities are available at the seven city parks.

Dawson County Historical Museum

The Dawson County Historical Museum in Lexington features "Big Al", a 13ft tall, 15,000 year old mammoth. The museum also has exhibits depicting the Oregon Trail, the Mormon Trail and a general store. There are military, railroad and automobile exhibits as well.

Heartland Museum of Military Vehicles

The Heartland Museum in Lexington features more than 100 military vehicles including jeeps, trucks, motorcycles, planes and helicopters. Other displays include weapons, uniforms, and equipment used by soldiers for everyday life.

Kearney, Nebraska

Named for Fort Kearney, Kearney (pop. 29,000) was considered a site for both the Nebraska state capitol and capital of the country due to its central location. Kearney is a stopping point along the migratory bird flyways.

Trails and Rails Museum

The Trails and Rails Museum is housed in an 1898 Union Pacific depot in Kearney. The depot has a waiting room, depot agent's office, a freight room and a baggage room with exhibits. Other buildings on the grounds include an 1898 Baptist Mission Church, the county's first frame schoolhouse and the 1884 Loup River Freighters Hotel.

Great Platte River Road Archway Monument

The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument is dedicated to the journey of the pioneers westward along the Great Platte River Road. Visitors can join a wagon train, experience a prairie crossing, a buffalo stampede and a stopover at a frontier fort.

Kearney Area Children's Museum

At the Kearney Area Children's Museum children and parents experience hands-on science, technology, culture, and arts exhibits. Displays include a television station, a grocery store, a medical center, a train room, and an old soda fountain.

Museum of Nebraska Art

The Museum of Nebraska Art in Kearney features works from the the first Nebraskans and contemporary artists. The permanent collection has over 5,000 works. An outdoor sculpture garden is on the grounds.

Fort Kearny State Historical Park

Fort Kearny was founded in 1848. It was the first military post built to protect the Oregon Trail. The grounds include a stockade and a blacksmith shop.

Hastings, Nebraska

Hastings (pop. 25,000) was founded in 1872 when the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad arrived. Hastings College opened in 1882. The Oregon Trail passes south of Hastings.

Children's Museum of Central Nebraska

The Children's Museum of Central Nebraska in Hastings provides interactive educational exhibits designed for children such as period rooms of daily life, a general store, military artifacts, railroad and restored automobiles.

Hastings Museum (JM McDonald Planetarium)

Gothenburg, Nebraska

Gothenburg (pop. 3,600) was founded in 1882 by Olof Bergstrom who worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. The town is named for Göteborg, Sweden. It has become a major agricultural center.

Pony Express Station

The Pony Express Station in Gothenburg was moved from the Upper 96 Ranch where it was originally used by the Pony Express riders and as a stage stop. It is dedicated to the memory of the Pony Express Riders and the pioneers of the Old West.

Sod House Museum

The Sod House Museum in Gothenburg features a replica of a sod house used by settlers in the area. It features a barn, windmills and sculptures.

Grand Island, Nebraska

Grand Island (pop. 44,500) was established in 1857 by German immigrants from Davenport, Iowa. It is the county seat of Hall County.

Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer

The Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer building was designed by the architect Edward Durell Stone. Hands-on exhibits are about pioneer life in Nebraska with more than 60 buildings that were moved to the site, restored and furnished.

Grand Island Zoo

The Grand Island Zoo is on seven acres in Stolley Park on Grand Island. The zoo is home to more than 140 animals from 75 species, from around the world.

Gering, Nebraska

Gering (pop. 7,700) lies just east of Scotts Bluff National Monument, a well-known landmark on the Oregon Trail. The town was founded in 1887.

North Platte Valley Museum

Exhibits at the North Platte Valley Museum in Gering detail settlement of the area. A sod house and log cabin showcase the early lives of settlers. An American Indian and fur trade exhibit shows the activities of the earliest American Indian inhabitants.

Wyobraska Wildlife Museum

The Wyobraska Wildlife Museum in Gering features more than 500 mounted animals from seven continents in hand-painted dioramas showing the animals in their native habitats. It is housed in a historic Union Pacific Rail Depot.

Fremont, Nebraska

Fremont (pop. 25,000) was established in 1856 and named for Gen. John C Fremont.
Fremont Lakes State Recreation Area has more than 20 lakes offering water sport activities and camping facilities.

Fremont & Elkhorn Valley Railway and Nebraska Railroad Museum

The Fremont & Elkhorn Valley Railway is the location of the Nebraska Railroad Museum. The tourist train follows the routes of the Mormon Trail and Maj. Steven Long's Western military expedition of the 1820s.

Louis E May Historical Museum

The Louis E May Museum in Fremont was built in 1874. It is a twenty-five room mansion featuring a general store, a one-room school house, a library and a rose garden.

Chadron, Nebraska

The first resident's of Chadron (pop. 5,600) held gunfights in the saloons. The town is in Dawes County, in northwestern Nebraska. Chadron is the location of Chadron State College.

Dawes County Historical Society Museum

The Dawes County Historical Society Museum contains a log house and barn, 1890s schoolhouse, pioneer church and C & NW caboose. The museum features a collection of antiques including a general store, a hospital room, blacksmith tools, farm machinery, vintage quilts, and a railroad room.

Brownville, Nebraska

Brownville (pop. 150) was founded in 1854 by Richard Brown, who built a log cabin on the banks of the Missouri Rive. The Steamboat Trace hiking/biking trail is open from Brownville, through Peru to Minersville. Brownville is known for hunting, fishing, birds, and fall tours.

Carson House

The Carson House in Brownville was built by Richard Brown, the founder of the town in 1860. Carson House was then purchased by John Carson. Many original furnishings are on display, most of which were purchased in St Louis and shipped by steamboat.

Captain Bailey Museum

Housed in a seven-gabled Victorian house in Brownville, the Captain Bailey Museum features period furniture, toys, clothed figures and a quilt collection. The home was the residence of a Civil War veteran.

Meriwether Lewis Museum

The Lewis Meriwether Museum in Brownville features a side wheeler dredge used by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the Missouri. The boat is docked on the river and contains the Museum of Missouri River History.

Bellevue, Nebraska

Bellevue (pop. 47,000) was established as a fur post in 1855. It served as a central trading point. In French, Bellevue means "beautiful view"; the name was chosen for the view overlooking the Missouri River. Fort Crook is a military base important for the city's economy.

Fontenelle Forest Nature Center

Fontenelle Forest Nature Center in Bellevue features more than 1,400 acres of forest, wetlands and marshlands. There are walking and hiking trails as well as a 1.0mi/1.6km boardwalk.

Sarpy County Historical Museum

The Sarpy County Historical Museum is the headquarters for the Sarpy County Historical Society. Exhibits include American Indian and pioneer life, and a log cabin thought to be the oldest in Nebraska.

Ashland, Nebraska

Ashland (pop. 2,300) is home to the Eugene T Mahoney State Park and the Lee G Simmons Conservation Park & Wildlife Safari.

Strategic Air & Space Museum

Located at Mahoney State Park is the gigantic Strategic Air Command Museum, displaying aircraft, intercontinental rockets and much more from the arsenal of the SAC, which was (and in principle still is) responsible for the conduct of atomic war from the air during the cold war.
In 2001 the name of the Strategic Air Command (SAC) Museum was changed to the Strategic Air & Space Museum.

Lee G Simmons Conservation Park and Wildlife Safari

The Wildlife Safari lets visitors travel in their vehicles or on the Safari train while animals roam freely. Some of the North American animals in the park are bison, elk, pron-horn antelope, sandhill cranes and waterfowl.

Alliance, Nebraska

Alliance is the county seat of Box Butte County, originally named Grand Lake. The name was changed in 1888 by the the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad superintendent.
A notable attraction near the town is Carhenge, a replica of Stonehenge built of automobiles.

Carhenge, near Alliance, is a replica of Stonehenge that was created by using old cars. Six families gathering for a family reunion in 1987 came up with the idea! Other sculptures created with old cars and/or car parts are on the grounds.

Dobby's Frontier Town

Dobby's Frontier Town is a turn-of-the-century town with an authentic general store, post office, original bootlegger's cabin with lookout, Chinese laundry, Wells Fargo Bank and jail.

Knight Museum of High Plains Heritage

The Knight Museum of High Plains Heritage in Alliance features railroad, agricultural and American Indian exhibits that show the history of western Nebraska.

Aurora, Nebraska

The town of Aurora (pop. 4,200) was named after Aurora, Illinois by an early settler, David Stone. It is the county seat of Hamilton County, Nebraska.

Plainsman Museum

The Plainsman Museum in Aurora features regional history displays from 1850 to 1950. Exhibits include the home of General D. Bates, an 1859 log cabin, dolls, clothing and cars.
The Plainsman Agricultural Building shows farm life with agricultural implements.

Edgerton Explorit Center

The Explorit Center in Aurora was named for Dr Harold Edgerton who was the founder of electronic flash photography and the creator of the strobe light and side sonar scanner. Interactive exhibits showcase scientific principles.

Fort Robinson State Park, Crawford, Nebraska

Further to the north, in the extreme northwest of Nebraska, Fort Robinson was built in 1874. With its palisades and watchtowers it gives an excellent impression of conditions in the time of the Indian wars. Here in 1877 the Indian chief Crazy Horse, who had come to the fort for peace negotiations, was murdered.
Fort Robinson was an active military post from when it was built until 1948. Some of the people who had major roles in the history of the fort include Crazy Horse, Walter Reed, Red Cloud, Arthur MacArthur, Dull Knife, General Crook and Doc Middleton. Many of the original buildings have been restored including the stables, blacksmith shop, barracks and officers' quarters.
Today visitors can participate in horseback rides, jeep tours, hayrack breakfast, and steak or buffalo stew cookouts. Fort Robinson State Park encompasses 22,000 acres in the Pine Ridge Area.

Fort Robinson Museum

Exhibits at the Fort Robinson Museum show the history from the fort's role with the Red Cloud Agency through the confinement of World War II German POW's. The library features exhibits on Fort Robinson, military, and western history.

Trailside Museum of Natural History

The Trailside Museum of Natural History west of Crawford features paleontology and geology exhibits about Nebraska's fossil history including a giant mammoth, fossil rhino and giant tortoise.

Chimney Rock National Historic Site

This 500 ft pinnacle of rock 24 mi. south-east on the North Platte River was a landmark on the Oregon Trail, telling the settlers travelling on it that after crossing the Great Plains they had the much more arduous passage of the Rockies ahead of them.
This is a major attraction on the Oregon Trail and in the American West.

Agate Fossil Beds National Monument

Twenty-two mi. south of Harrison is Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, where fossils of primeval mammals dating back 20 million years were found. The museum displays some of these finds, as well as items belonging to Ogallala Chief Red Cloud.
The first scientific excavation, in 1904, discovered the fossils of a previously unknown rhinoceros.
Self-guiding trails lead to historic fossil quarries and a historic cabin.

Bluebird Nursery Gardens, Clarkson, Nebraska

Bluebird Nursery has nearly 2 acres of Trial and Display Gardens with thousands of varieties of annuals, perennials, ground covers, grasses and wildflowers. In the Spring, the flowering bulbs add to the display!
The Living Arch and Fountain Garden as well as grass garden, with the Buford the buffalo grass buffalo, are available for visitors to enjoy.

Bess Streeter Aldrich House and Museum, Elmwood, Nebraska

The Bess Streeter Aldrich House and Museum in Elmwood features the life of the 20th C author who wrote more than 160 short stories and 12 books that deal with family values and pioneer history. The museum features memorbilia and family antiques, as well as exhibits that tell the story of several of her novels. The gift shop offers books and souvenirs for sale.

Nebraska National Forest

The Nebraska National Forest is located in the northwest quadrant of the state. This area includes the short grass prairie of the Oglala National Grassland to the forested Pine Ridge. The nearby recreation area provides opportunity for camping, picnicking, swimming, and activities on the Niobrara River and the Merritt Reservoir.

John G Neihardt Center, Bancroft, Nebraska

John Gneisenau Neihardt was a teacher, philosopher, and Poet Laureate. He moved to Bancroft in 1900 and began his major work, A Cycle of the West. Visitors to his home see the study where he wrote many of his works and visit the Sioux Prayer Garden.

Fort Hartsuff State Historical Park, Burwell, Nebraska

Fort Hartsuff State Historical Park is home to part of the original 1280-acre Military Reservation. Nine of the original buildings on the Park grounds are made of grout - a mixture of gravel, lime, and cement. The Fort was in use from 1874-1881 during Indian warfare on the Plains.

Rock Creek Station State Historical Park, Fairbury, Nebraska

Rock Creek Station was a stage and Pony Express stop that served the Oregon Trail. The park features deep ruts that were carved by the many wagons that traveled the Oregon Trail. The Station began as a cabin with a lean-to and barn. At one time it was a store where hay, grain, and supplies could be bought or sold.

Fort Atkinson State Historical Park, Fort Calhoun, Nebraska

Fort Atkinson was the first U.S. military post west of the Missouri River. The fort was used from 1820 and 1827. Living history demonstrations feature the blacksmith and gunsmith set up at the Armorer's Shop and the Indian agent in his quarters at the Council House.

Ash Hollow State Historical Park, Lewellen, Nebraska

The Ash Hollow Formation is an example of the geology of the central Great Plains before the ice age.
The Ash Hollow State Historical Park features a 1903 schoolhouse and a nature trail with ruts that were carved by thousands of wagons using the Oregon Trail.

Niobrara - Kreycik Riverview Elk Ranch

Kreycik River View Elk & Buffalo Ranch is a working elk, bison, and cattle ranch and farm. Visitors to the ranch can take part in a guided covered wagon tour that travels through the pastures. Spring and early Summer are ideal for viewing the babies while Fall is the season for bull elk bugling.

Oglala National Grassland

The Oglala National Grassland has wildlife including pronghorn, turkey, deer, grouse, fox, owl, and prairie dog. Agate, Bordgate, and Rock Bass reservoirs have good fishing opportunities. Within the Grassland is Hudson-Meng Bison Bonebed which has 10,000 year old bison skeletons.

Ponca State Park

Ponca State Park features nearly 1,400 acres and is located 2mi/3km from the town of Ponca on the Missouri River bluffs in northeastern Nebraska. Lewis and Clark passed this place when they travelled up the Missouri and the park is part of the Lewis and Clark Historical Trail. The park has 20mi/32km of hiking trails.

Anna Bemis Palmer Museum, York, Nebraska

The Anna Bemis Palmer Museum in York features a sod house and a house built of wood. Other exhibits include military artifacts, appliances, and vintage clothing. The bank exhibit has bank cages and windows from the original Blue River Bank in McCool Junction that operated from 1889-1966.

Bayard - Oregon Trail Wagon Train

At the Oregon Trail Wagon Train east of Bayard visitors can take a covered wagon tour of the Oregon Trail. Chuck wagon cookouts and a songfest are offered. Tours of Chimney Rock and canoe rentals on the North Platte River are available.

Gage County Historical Museum, Beatrice, Nebraska
