Naranco - San Miguel de Lillo
A little higher up is the church of San Miguel de Lillo, originally the chapel of a ninth century royal palace but altered in the 15th century. Externally the church has a strikingly sturdy appearance. Here too, and in the aisled interior, are the typical Asturian twisted columns. Flanking the entrance are two similar Byzantine-style bas-reliefs depicting a consul accompanied by dignitaries. The delicate carving of the windows has recently been protected from destruction by sheets of glass.
